For many centuries, the only story of Africa that has been shared with our global community via literature, media and all outlet channels has been that of a single story. When asked what people know about the continent of Africa today, the words they would associate with Africa are: slavery, hunger, disease, and colonization.
This perception has had a huge impact on the way Africans have been treated in the world. The Discovering Africa Series was born out of a desire to ensure that the disrespect of human life as evident in the June 2020 murder of George Floyd, is one that is never repeated. Now more than ever our young people need to garner an understanding and a mutual respect for all members of our community and the only way that this will be possible is by understanding authentic African History, not just the single narrative of slavery, but of a people who not only have survived some of the most inhumane atrocities known to humanity in our time, but also of the contributions made by Africans to our global communities which have been largely hidden.
