When it comes to international travel, there are some essential items I cannot live without. These items allow me to travel with ease. As with everything, you get what you pay for. Quality means everything. Pay now or pay later, is what I always say.
1. First things first…. you need a GREAT SPINNER CARRYON
At the top of the list of my international travel essentials is a good, – correction great (spinner) carryon luggage with wheels. It’s worth spending a little extra money on, because with any travel bags, quality means everything, especially the quality of the spinners aka wheels. I have learned that rolling over cobble stone streets, uneven pavement and dirt roads, will take a toll on your luggage and you.
Quality is everything. Buy a cheap bag and you will be pay the price eventually. If you are a frequent domestic or international traveler, and you dont have a quality bag, you will find yourself buying replacement luggage often. Because when the wheels go out, its like dragging dead weight. Trust me I have been there. And if you have to check your bag for whatever reason there is always the chance your bag will thrown here, there and everywhere, so you will want a bag that is durable enough to withstand whatever.
Carryon dimensions for US carriers
- Shouldn’t exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches / 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters (including handles and wheels)
- Must fit in the sizer at the airport.
For international airline carriers please check their website, as their requirements may vary.
There are many options but my personal favorites include luggage makers Brookstone, Longchamp and Tumi
2. Travel Document Holder
Welcome to the new world order of global travel, where in additional to your passport other additional documents are now required to move about the planet. In addition to your passport and (visa) you now need to present hard copies of your vaccine card and covid tests. And for some other countries other health related – covid tracing paperwork may also be needed. Even if you have digital copies of everything it is always a good idea to have hard copies. A great passport holder provides easy access to all documents in one spot.
3. Universal Adapter
So cost efficient. So easy. Instead of having multiple adaptors, having one is so much easier. It removes the guesswork as to what type of electrical adapter is needed where. There are universal adapters that can be used in over 150 countries. You don’t have to worry about buying a new adaptor for each country. Just keep your worldwide travel adapter in your carry on bag and you are good to go.
4. A Great Daypack or Backpack
A day pack is similar to a backpack, but a little lighter. So whether you use a daypack or a backpack, it is a must have travel essential. Actually I travel with both. Great to hold stuff whether you traveling or day tripping. There are fashionable and functionable bags in canvas, durable cotton or nylon. My personal favorite is my canvas backpack, because it is lightweight and easier to keep cleaner. Whatever you do, don’t weigh down you day pack/backpack with items you don’t need, as that will defeat the purpose. Once again travel light.
A little umbrella and a great foldable plastic poncho will go a long way when the rains come. I don’t mind getting wet especially when I am prepared for the weather. Whether the forecast calls for rain or not, be like a boy/girl scout and pack a small umbrella and a poncho. For the ladies there are so many styles and colors if you want to be a bit fashionable. I have an animal print. So if and when the rains come, when you are prepared, you can pull out your umbrella and put on your poncho and keep it moving. And these two items don’t take up a lot of space. Can tuck into your carryon easily.
6. Noise Cancellation Headphones
Have you ever been on a flight, a subway or train and just wanted to escape from the noises around you. As the name implies, noise cancellation headphones go beyond the call of duty of normal ear plugs. They cancel ALL ambiant noise, protect your hearing, and reduce environmental distractions so that you can enjoy a better audio and (travel) experience. You know my motto, don’t compromise on quality. Quality means everything especially with electronic equipment. My personal favorite is Bose
7. Comfortable Shoes
As for me, I prefer closed in comfortable yet stylish canvas bottom sole shoes. I love stylish sneakers that are easy to take on and off, ideally something without a lace to tie and untie when going through security checkpoints. Whatever the shoe make sure it is comfortable for you and already “broken in.” My personal favorites for women travelers, are Sketchers. To the men, if you have a personal favorite please list in the comments sections.
8. Masks and other stuff
In most international destinations, there is a mask requirement in airports, flights, public transportation and some public and private areas including restaurants, shops, museums etc. So be sure to have a supply of masks. For international travel, I was on board an Air France flight recently and they even had requirements as to the type of masks. In other words their airplane, their rules. Bandanas and cotton masks were not allowed. If you did not have a medical or surgical masks they would give you one. Of course in this day and age in addition to face masks, be sure to bring and ample supply of hand sanitizer, alcohol and hand wipes.
9. A Good Travel Pillow
Need I say more. If you are not traveling in business or first class, a travel pillow is an international travel necessity. It can prevent headaches, neck cramp and upper back pain. With so many options out there please don’t leave home without it.
